Habitat:
Openings in Pinus ponderosa-Pseudotsuga menziesii forest in dry gravelly soil on gentle NE facing slope; w/ common associate Chrysothamnus sp., Oreocarya thyrsiflora, Stipa comata, Koeleria macrantha.

Notes:
Widespread in dry montane meadows, dominant locally & usually wherever it occurs. Precambrian granodiorite to quartz monzonite substrate. 7.5' Harvard Lakes quad.
