Nearly flat, barren black-shale slopes derived from a lower member of the Pierre Formation, with Tetradymia canescens.

Forming large hemispherical mounds to 50 cm diam. with 20-30 stems, branched caudex from a thick, vertical rootstock up to 5 cm diam with a smell like sweet carrots or weak turpentine when fresh.
