Naturally scattered in shrubby woodland.

Single-trunked tall shrub or small tree, thornless, w/ white flowers. Bark light silvery gray w/ horizontal bands of lenticels. Branches zigzag. Fresh fruit in August black, shiny, sour tasting, 8 to 8.5 mm diameter (Scully 150). Lvs stay green till Nov.
