Intermingling with sagebrush, and grasses in openings bounded by sagebrush and shrubs, in light colored shaley soil; associates include Astragalus pattersonii, A. missouriensis var. amphibolus, Achnantherum hymendoides, Mahonia repens, Packera mancosana, Townsendia leptotes, Petradoria pumila, Hymenopappus filifolius, Antennaria dimorpha; relatively common.
