Tundra-subalpine ecotone. Dense stands of tall Salix brachycarpa/glauca and S. planifolia enclosing small, moderately rich fen pools on spring-fed slope. Forming extensive tight masses under willows. The white tomentum effectively cements the stand together.
Leaves much smaller and weaker than in P. juniperinum
