Dry, hot exposed south-facing slopes.
Shrubs very stout and with rigid branches, bright red from the early shoots, stiffly divaricate; foliage somewhat greener than in A. pungens but indument similar; bark peeling in small crisped "plane-shavings" especially on the younger growth but also on the old shoots.
