Openings in Pinus ponderosa-Pseudotsuga menziesii forest in dry gravelly soil, on gentle NE facing slope; with common associates Chrysothamnus sp., Oreocarya thrysiflora, Picrandenis richardsonii, Stipa comata, Carex obtusata, Koeleria macrantha.

7.5' Harvard Lakes quad. Prickly leaved cushions; inflorescence one-sided, flowers blue to purple; occasional locally, common in montane meadows. Precambrian granodiorite to quartz monzonite substrate.
