Up to 2-ft tall penstemon locally scattered to common in open lodgepole pine forest, in fine-sandy, damp soil, covered by needle-leaf litter. Assoc. plants incl. Oreochrysum parryi, fireweed, Trifolium hybridum, Psilochenia runcinata, aspen seedlings.
