On dry, open gravelly tundra knoll near timberline. With common associates Castilleja haydenii, C. occidentalis, Achillea lanulosa, Trisetum spicatum, Eremogone fendleri, Silene acaulis, Phlox condensata, Heuchera bracteata. Common. Lower member of Sangre de Cristo Form. (red arkose sandstone, conglomerate ss. siltstone & shale).
